Life experiences #5: Social & socials

'I think I'll delete my instagram account'.

I actually have a folder just for 'socials' #facepalm
That one sentence brought the gaze of the entire room of 4-6 people piercing through my head screaming 'WHAT?! WHY?' while I was lying nicely on my belly still scrolling through insta.

Never in my wildest imagination would I imagine it was THAT big a deal to deserve such attention. Yes, it was one of my more dramatic comments but the reaction I received definitely felt larger than life. But that's it nowadays; if you're a student, you've got to have either one of these: insta, twitter, tumblr, pinterest, G+,  foursquare...
and I'm not even going to mention the unforgiving f -that's a given.

Seeing the newest fad around called Dayre really got me thinking about the diff media-whores around. Hey, I'm not trying to trip on any toes here! I've been called a typical social media girl myself and I didn't know how to respond to that: was it an insult, compliment or just a statement?? All that thinking was bugging me for months and lead me to my experiment; I now have every single app I've just mentioned on my iPhone and the ones I didnt, I downloaded ie. foursquare and dayre. I'm going to be completely honest here: I can't keep up with it anymore. I'm annoyed as hell but yet I just can't seem to push that 'delete account' button.

I've NO clue how my girls do it but they seem to be thriving seriously well on the attention they're receiving. As for me, I started out with pure intentions of filling up my 'free' time, catching up with friends I've lost touch with or even just to express myself on one of these sites/apps but as time grew (or more like I grew), I realised these sites aren't just a platform for expressive ideas or talents anymore; it's a competition between friends, a stalker's essential kit and even a dock for unloading their narcissistic ways.

As much as I hate to admit how terrible my self-esteem has been after a load on insta and the amount of unwanted info I've gotten from facebook plus the time-consuming twitter (the 3 apps I can't live without), I just absolutely cannot suspend any of them. I literally have to switch my phone off just to get myself off these sites. This might work before I try to doze off but not when I'm studying as spotify which incidentally is on my phone is my study date every time.

You can't stop hating on it but you sure can't stop loving it as well. My most recent app downloaded - 4sq for those who obviously has been jumping sentences- has served me well in London. Being the piggie I am, I went gallivanting for good drinks, desserts & food with reviews/tips plus every info you could possibly imagine at the tip of your fingers(literally) just from that app. Dayre has been a nice quiet platform where I could explore my inner thoughts without being judged, almost like my personal mini blog as I find twitter is defo getting too public and over-analyzed; lyrics to a song may or may NOT mean anything guys, keep that in your head please.

With all these SNS(social networking sites) appearing left and right, I can't help but wonder what everyone else thinks about it. I know I find twitter indispensable to me but which of these has become a need for you (besides facebook) and how are you using your SNS? Do you think you can live without it because I can come out and tell you now, I don't know if I can and honestly speaking I think that's normal in our society or am I being too naive?
